SAGE & THYME is currently used as the gold standard in communication training in England and is being rolled out across Forth Valley across all care sectors.

This exciting communication workshop is practice-based and would be relevant for all health & social care staff working in a range of care sectors. It is equally relevant for nursing assistants, patient activity leaders, voluntary/statutory care support staff as well as registered nursing staff.

The workshop will utilise a range of experiential learning & teaching methods including small group discussions, interactive demonstrations and DVD analysis

Why do this workshop?

Research evidence suggests that when faced with the concerns, fears and emotions

of patients/relatives, care workers have a tendency to:

  • Focus on physical and practical issues in order to save time
  • Avoid listening to the concerns of patients and their caregivers
  • Change the subject of focus onto the least threatening aspect of the conversation
  • Deal with the first concerns before hearing all of the concerns
  • Give information or advice/reassurance too early

Dr Sally Boa - Head of Palliative Care Education, Research & Practice Development, Strathcarron Hospice

Katherine Roseweir, Lead Nurse, Adult Mental Health, Forth Valley Wide
