As part of #CarersWeek, Marie has shared her story with us of her experience of Strathcarron Hospice as a carer.

Marie has been a carer for four years for her dad Patrick since he was diagnosed with terminal cancer and fibrosis of the lungs. Marie did not wish to be photographed, but was generous to share her story with us.

Marie’s GP signposted her to the Hospice Live Your Life service.

Marie says: “Caring for someone with a life limiting illness can be hard going at times with all the appointments, care professionals and medication to manage; but he is my dad and I love him to bits and would do anything needed to support him. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“The Live Your Life team has been absolutely amazing; I couldn’t do without them. I can’t speak highly enough of them. They are always upbeat and can’t do enough for me. They help signpost and provide support when required. They have been my little heroes every one of them, every time I call. To know they are just on the end of the phone if I need them is such a valuable service.

“When we have been having some challenges with my dad’s care, they have been able to step in and been so helpful, not just about advice regarding dad, but they also ask about me and how I am coping. If I need anything – like a wheelchair – they have been able to help.

“Things will get worse with my dad’s condition eventually and it is very comforting to know Strathcarron is there to advise us, if and when required.”

Our Live Your Life team not only supports anyone living with a life limiting illness across Forth Valley, Cumbernauld and Kilsyth - they also support anyone caring for them.

Patients and their families can speak directly to the Live your Life Team at the Hospice without a professional referral.

We can help you navigate uncertainty, chat through challenges and together find ways for you to get on with living your life.
