I started volunteering at the hospice in January 2023 as a Ward Receptionist on a Monday evening but due to my full time job I had to stand down in January 2024 but continued to do my stint on the flower arranging rota. I spoke with Eileen the Volunteer Co-ordinator and asked if I could pick up ad hoc jobs as and when required.

Having been a family member attending the hospice for nine weeks in 2009 while my brother in law Gordon received palliative care for a brain tumour I knew one day I would like to give back my time to help other families.

While on shift in the ward I was able to share a small part of my experience with others letting them know it was normal to feel angry, sad, tearful or just exhausted. But the most important thing for me was to reinforce to individuals how amazing the staff and care and surroundings of the hospice were for palliative care.
