Help and advice for professionals

Telephone Advice

Telephone advice is available 24 hours a day from our specialist team, predominantly for professionals. In some cases the nurses working in the In-patient Unit will be able to help you. If the problem requires medical advice your call will be directed to a Hospice Physician or Consultant in Palliative Medicine.

Specialist pharmacy advice is also available from the NHS Palliative Care Pharmacists based at the Hospice during working hours.

This advice line is not to be confused with the NHS ‘palliative care helpline’ for patients, which is staffed by the out of hours District Nursing team.

When does palliative care begin?

Some people think that you only have hospice care when you are dying, but this is not true. A hospice palliative care team might help control symptoms such as pain or breathlessness early on in your illness, either at home or staying at the hospice for a few days before going home again.
What is palliative care?

Palliative care is not just about care in the last days and hours of life, but about ensuring quality of life for both the person and their family at every stage of a life-limiting illness from diagnosis onwards.
